Introduction

We have found this section of powercube.net one of the most difficult to develop, and in fact, it may still be considered under development. It’s not that there isn’t a lot that could be said about strategies for acting on power, it’s just that this becomes a huge subject – and quickly could become a whole Wikipedia on advocacy, social movements, political participation and social change!

For now, we will focus in this section on examples of the implications of powercube analysis for strategies for change.  Among the best resources are those provided by Just Associates.  They have developed a very useful tool known as the Power Matrix, which examines the forms of power (visible, hidden, and invisible) and the various strategies for dealing with them. Read an introduction to the Power Matrix by Valerie Miller from Just Associates.  This is elaborated further in their publication on Making Change Happen 2.

Just Associates have also developed a very useful manual on advocacy strategies, A New Weave of Power.  Several of the chapters in that manual are on how to move from analysis of power to empowering strategies. Read the New Weave of Power contents and download selected chapters in the handouts section of this website.

In a case study from Indonesia, Nani Zulminarni, a Just Associates member, describes how she has used some of these approaches for building women’s empowerment in Indonesia.  Another very valuable resource is Action Aid’s Critical Webs of Power and Change.click on the powercube

In another section of this resource, Analysing Power, we present the basic dimensions of the powercube.  Each dimension has implications for strategies for action.
